Day 2: A delightful inheritance
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance (Psalm 16:6).
Our Father in heaven, we pray as the psalmist, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing” (Psalm 16:2).
Long ago, You promised Your people, I will give [a land] to you as an inheritance, a land flowing with milk and honey.” I am the Lord your God, who has set you apart from the nations (Leviticus 20:24).
And as only You can, O Lord, You designed Your trustworthy promise for fulfillment in the physical world that is seen, and in the spiritual realm that is unseen (2 Corinthians 4:18). For earlier You had established Your covenant with Abraham:
“I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed…” (Genesis 26:4).
In fulfillment of Your covenant promise to Abraham You provided Your Messiah to reconcile humanity to God (2 Corinthians 5:19), and You made it clear that Your promise of salvation was for all nations on earth:
Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant (Hebrews 9:15).
Father, You continue to lead and direct the lives of Your people in the physical as well as in the spiritual world. It is You who determine our boundary lines—You make our lot secure— in our homes, our families, our jobs and vocations, our churches, our circles, our communities, our world. You are our portion and our cup (Psalm 16: 5-6)— what You open no one can shut, and what You shut no one can open (Isaiah 22:22, Revelation 3:7).
Lord, when we grow weak, and our heart and our flesh fail, remind us that You are the strength of our life and our portion forever (Psalm 73:26). Remind us that You that You cause our cup to overflow with Your goodness (Psalm 23:5). Above all, You have given us Your Son, and through Him a delightful inheritance:
In Your great mercy You have given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for us, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:3-5).
