Day 3: I will come to you
I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you (John 14:18).
Our Father, as we contemplate Your goodness, we join in the spontaneous praise of the psalmist, Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! (Psalm 107:8).
Although You are the great and mighty God, You are mindful of us; You care for mere humans (Psalm 8:4). In fulfillment of Your promise, from the dawning of creation, You set Your plan in motion to come to us to redeem a fallen, lost humanity.
Early in the history of Your people, as Your plan unfolded, King Solomon expressed awe and wonder at the idea of God dwelling with humans: “But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain You. How much less this temple I have built!” (1 Kings 8:27).
But Your astounding plan was not just for an earthly temple—You meant to really dwell on earth. And when the set time had fully come God sent His Son that we might be adopted as children of God (Galatians 4:4).
The apostle John, writing his firsthand account explains that Jesus, "became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).
Almighty God, Your perfect plan continues to unfold. The Lord Jesus has promised, I am going to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am (John 14:2-3).
Just as before, Your promises are trustworthy and true. And when the set time has fully come, You will fulfill Your unfailing word. But in the meantime, the Lord Jesus has assured us, I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you...“Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching. My Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them (John 14:18, 23).
O Lord, how we need You! The world is full of chaos and trouble. But You have not left us naively unaware of its difficulties. “I have told you these things," You said, "so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 17:33).
Thank You for coming to us, for making Your home with us. Thank You for Your Spirit within us—the seal of Your promise. Through Him we are reminded of Your assurance, Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).
We pray in the words of the apostle Paul, May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace as we trust in Him, so that we may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).
