Day 5: No surprises
Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare (Psalm 40:5).
Heavenly Father, You are greatly exalted (Psalm 47:9)—the Lord Most High...the Great King over all the earth (Psalm 47:2).
It is impossible for us to grasp the scope of Your power, Your vision, Your might and Your majesty—though often, we apply our limited human "understanding" and "wisdom"— declaring our preferred governance of the vast array around us (Genesis 2:1), and creating our own prescriptions for the course of life and human affairs.
But You alone are God—You have established Your throne in heaven, and Your kingdom rules over all (Psalm 103:19). Your will is good, pleasing, and perfect (Romans 12:2), Your way(s) and Your works [are] perfect; Your word is flawless; You are upright and just... A faithful God who does no wrong (Deuteronomy 32:4, Psalm 18:30).
Give us the faith to trust You and to believe the evidence of Your goodness, Your compassion, and Your unfailing love in whatever season we find ourselves. You have not promised to miraculously dispense with all the ill-effects of this fallen world while we are in this life. But you have promised that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
Remind us, Lord, that There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the Lord (Proverbs 21:30). For You there are no surprises—it is Your purpose that prevails (Proverbs 19:21).
Thank You for all that You have planned for us, in Your foreknowledge of, and sovereignty over all that is in this life. We pray especially for those who are in hard seasons. Remind us that You display Your wonders in need as in prosperity, in conflict as in peace, in sorrow as in joy, in struggle as in ease, in weakness as in thriving. Help us not to miss them.
Help us today to trust Your guiding hand and purpose. Help us to call to mind the wonders of Your love, the wonders of Your compassion, and the wonders of Your daily grace, sufficient for every season.
