Day 5: Who will bring us prosperity?
Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of Your face shine on us. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound (Psalm 4:6-7).
Righteous God our Father, our Shield and Defense, our Savior, Sustainer, and Provider, You hear the prayers of Your children. You show us mercy and give us relief from our distress for You have set apart Your faithful servant for Yourself, and You hear when we call to You (Psalm 4:1.3). This was David's prayer as he committed his safety, his well-being, his needs — his very life to You. And this is our prayer.
In a world of illusionary independence and imagined individualism, the child of God acknowledges the reality of all existence, My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2).
Father, thank You that we can live in that confidence, even when the scoffers smirk, "Where is their God?" (Psalm 115:2), and the skeptics challenge, and the faint of heart and doubters lament, "Who will bring us prosperity?" (Psalm 4:6).
In the midst of trial or difficulty, change or uncertainty, teach us, our God, to live, like David, in the assurance that declares, I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13).
You have taught us to pray, Give us today our daily bread (Matthew 6:11) — so that we will daily be reminded of the source of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17; see also 1 Timothy 6:17). You sustain us, and You hold all things together in both the physical and the spiritual realm (Colossians 1:15-17).
You have assured us that You know what we need before we [even] ask (Matthew 6:8). We can safely rest in Your promise to provide for our needs (Matthew 6:25-34).
But most of all, O Lord, thank You for the true blessings that come from the light of Your countenance. Thank You for the gift of Your incredible peace that fills our hearts with more joy than the abundant fields and the overflowing vats of this world.
You have taught us to know and to say, "You are my portion forever." Help us to live daily in that truth, and in any and every circumstance of life, to wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord (Psalm 27:14).
