Daily Affirmations - Day 5 - Near Your Altar: Like Little Children

Day 5: Like little children

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a little child to Him, and placed the child among them. And He said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:1-4).

Our Father from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name (Ephesians 3:14-15), the apostle John marveled at the love that draws us into the family of God: See what great love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1).

On more than one occasion You opened up Your heaven and from Your Majestic Glory declared Your delight in Your beloved Son (Matthew 3:17, Mark 9:17, 2 Peter 1:17). And our Lord Jesus in turn declared to us, “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you” (John 15:9).

Lord, You desire that we become like children— children with whom You are pleased— children in whom You delight. Make our hearts like that of a little child, unpresuming and guileless, completely trusting You, wholeheartedly following You.

You have taught us, as You taught the disciples, that Your kingdom is not of this world. Help us not to be unduly preoccupied with this world's kingdoms, thrones, hierarchies, seats and structures. And wherever You have placed us in positions of status, authority, leadership, or power, remind us that it is the Lord Christ we are serving (Colossians 3:24).

The message You gave to the disciples was emphatic and sobering: “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 18:3 -NKJV). Search us today, and cleanse us of prideful, envious, competitive, and self-elevating attitudes and perspectives. Help us to draw near to Your altar with the humble, open, trusting heart of a child.
