Day 5: Be free!

This is what the Lord says: “In the time of My favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances, to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’ (Isaiah 49:8-9).

Our Father, Redeemer and Holy One, Your words are rich, and full of layers and layers of promise and prophecy, marvelously designed to unfold in amazing, perfect, manifold detail. Only You, O Sovereign God could declare truth to be yet revealed, in multi-faceted ways, yet with accurate, specific, unquestionable fulfillment.

Thus we find firmly embedded in Your promises to Your ancient people, Your covenant promise for the redemption of all humanity (Genesis 26:4). You spoke a clear and specific oath that set apart a people, calling them and speaking their name before they were born, designating them as "My servant in whom I will display My splendor" (Isaiah 49:1, 3).

And in that self-same promise, You were also providing unmistakable detail about the advent of One who would be a light for the Gentiles, that [Your] salvation may reach to the ends of the earth (Isaiah 49:6, Luke 2:32). You spoke of a restoration not just for the land of Israel, but for the entire world— a reassign[ment] of the desolate inheritances of humanity (Isaiah 49:8).

Included in that amazing redemption plan are those who were once far away [who] have been brought near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2:13). For You spoke not just to Your ancient people, but also to us, as You declared the words of favor and salvation (Isaiah 49:8).

By Your great mercy, we can step out of darkness— out of guilt, hopelessness and despair— into Your marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9 - NKJV). By Your amazing grace we can be free from all chains— chains that enslave the soul to sin (Romans 6:14), and chains that entrap us in dungeons even after we've already been set free. (Galatians 5:1).

Lord, above the sounds of ruin and desolation around us, above bereavement and barrenness, exile and rejection, captivity and oppression— above the despair that whimpers, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me” (Isaiah 49:14), the sound of Your truth still goes out throughout all the earth:

Listen to Me... Hear this... And now the Lord says... He says... This is what the Lord says... This is what the Sovereign Lord says... But this is what the Lord says... (Isaiah 49:1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 22, 25).

And what does my Lord say to His servant?

"Come out... Be free... I am the Lord; those who hope in Me will not be disappointed" (Isaiah 49:9, 23).
