Day 6: Our Father
He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth" (Psalm 46:10).
Almighty, Sovereign God, the Lord Jesus taught us to pray by first setting our hearts to knowing, and acknowledging— from the moment we come into Your presence— that You are a God of might and power and awesome majesty. Our Lord knew we cannot pray unless we understand who God is— Your name, Your character— Your righteousness; the impossible gulf between our humanity and Your holiness.
Yet, You urge us to come and pray to You, trusting the sacrifice of our Savior and great High Priest to bridge the great divide. And in the true posture of prayer— of holy reverence and humble gratitude, we are awed and amazed that we are able to call You— the God, who is a consuming fire— "Our Father in heaven."
O Lord, teach us to pray as our Savior taught and as the Holy Spirit enables; to cease from our pagan babbling; to be still and know that You are God. Teach us right perspective, for we are prone to look at mountains and quaking earth, and surging sea. Teach us to be still and know that You are God of the mountains and God of the sea, God of the earth and God of the waters.
Teach us to be still and know that You are God— that You reign in the midst of removal and upheaval, chaos and uproar, tremor and convulsion, war and desolation. Teach us to be still and know that You reign over rulers and kingdoms, armies and nations.
Teach us to be still and know the hallowed God of heaven, the Most High who dwells in His Holy Place. Teach us to know that This God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end (Psalm 48:14). Teach us to be still and know that this God is the God of Jacob; this God is our refuge and our strength; this God is our fortress. Therefore, we will not fear... (Psalm 46:2).
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your Name.
