Day 6: Great and awesome wonders
"I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God" (Isaiah 43:12).
“How great You are, Sovereign Lord!” David prayed. “There is no one like You, and there is no God but You, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for Himself, and to make a name for Himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders…" (2 Samuel 7:22-23).
In the individual and collective lives of Your people, You displayed Your power as witness to the world of Your sovereignty, Your supremacy, Your might, and Your greatness.
Not only did You use their lives as a witness to the people around them then, but You have left accounts of their history to Your church today as witnesses and examples of Your faithfulness, love, and watchful care over Your people. And as we trust and obey You, You hold us in turn as witnesses to the world around us.
Lord, strengthen our faith as we remember the great and awesome wonders You performed through ordinary humans like us. In our waiting, remind us of Abraham, in our forgottenness, Joseph, in our quaking, Gideon, in our smallness, David, in our suffering, the Lord Jesus.
And in all the circumstances of our lives, teach us to recall and to firmly grasp Your reminder, "I, even I, am the Lord, and apart from Me there is no savior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—I, and not some foreign god among you" (Isaiah 43:11).
Teach us to remember Your liberation in oppression, Your pathway in deep waters, Your manna in the wilderness, Your deliverance in battle, Your perfect purpose on a cruel cross, Your ultimate victory in an empty tomb.
Father, as with Your ancient people, You have given us the assurance of Your saving grace over our lives: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).
Teach us to be strong, effective witnesses of that grace. Let our lives be evidence of Your great and awesome wonders.
