Day 6: At Thy feet its treasure store
As she stood behind [Jesus] at His feet weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them (Luke 7:38).
Our Lord, You alone are the Lord. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship You (Nehemiah 9:6).
The psalmist calls heaven and earth to worship as he contemplates Your glory and Your majesty: Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness (Psalm 29:1-2).
But so often, consumed by earth, we miss the sights and sounds of heaven around us, and the wonder and majesty John describes: We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14). Not so this woman who poured out worship at Your feet (Luke 7:36-50).
It was not the condemnation of the self-righteous that stirred her— not the weight of their judgment nor the mark of their branding, "sinful woman" (Luke 7:39) — but the heartfelt conviction of her need for forgiveness in the presence of majesty and glory, love and compassion, justice and mercy. And unabashed, she poured out her worship and her tears before You— salt, saliva, perfume— mingled in full reverence and holy adoration.
O Lord, teach me to worship You like that— with heartfelt tears, sacred love, total abandon. May my prayer[s] be set before You like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice (Psalm 141:2).
Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
