Day 7: Toward Jesus
“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.” “Come,” He said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus (Matthew 14:28-29).
Lord our God, You are the God who performs miracles; You display Your power among the peoples (Psalm 77:14). But often, we "lose You" in familiarity and take little note of Your wonder and amazing greatness all around us.
Day after day, night after night, we see Your glory, see Your handiwork, hear the voice of Your majesty resounding to the ends of the world (Psalm 19:1-4). Yet we are no different from the disciples, who cried out in fear at a display of Your power, and confused the living God with an apparition from the dead (Matthew 14:26).
We marvel (and some scoff) that You walked on water, but never stop to consider that our own boats are afloat on water, and that we ourselves walk on a rotating earth: We never stop to consider the daily and recurring miracles of buoyancy, gravity, pull, force, mass, and "everything" You sustain by Your powerful word (Hebrews 1:3). But You are patient with us, Lord. You know our little faith, and our doubt; yet You tell us "Come!"
O give us the courage to get down out of the boat... and come toward Jesus (Matthew 14:29). Help us to step out of our confined hulls of doubt and fear— into the deep toward You and wherever You are calling us— repentance, relationship, change, faith, trust, surrender.
Lord Jesus, fill our eyes with all that You are, so we see only You and not the threatening winds. Fill our ears with the voice that speaks peace to waves, and to troubled souls, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid" (Matthew 14:27).
Fill our minds with the knowledge that You are holding out Your hand to immediately catch us, lest we fall. Fill our hearts with worship, wonder, and the joyful assurance that "Truly You are the Son of God" (Matthew 14:31-33).
