Should you not fear Me?” declares the Lord. “Should you not tremble in My presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it" (Jeremiah 5:22).
Heavenly Father, You are Lord over all creation—You are the great and mighty God who alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea (Job 9:8). You are Lord over the winds and the waves, and You are Lord over our lives.
Yet, Lord, we often miss You at the center of all that is—all that can possibly be. We look at the rolling waves and miss Your mighty tread, we listen to their deafening roar and miss the sound of Your "Peace, be still!" (Mark 4:39 - NKJV).
God who keeps us, we know You neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:4). Remind us of Your watchful care when the waves of worry, fear and anxiety threaten to engulf us. Remind us that You are the God who put a dividing line in the sand—the God who says, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’ (Job 38:11).
O Lord, forgive us for not truly apprehending Your glory, Your power, Your might, and Your majesty. Forgive us for our misplaced focus. Forgive us for trembling in fear at rolling waves and choppy seas, while all nature bows in fear and trembling before You; and even the wind and the waves obey [You] (Matthew 8:27).
Remove from our hearts the barriers to understanding who You are. Remove from our hearts the barriers to holy fear and and reverent worship. Teach us to fear You, to tremble in Your presence.
Give us hope and unshakeable trust when the turbulence of this life threatens to drown our hope and our peace. Remind us of Your promise that "the waves may roll, but they cannot prevail" (Jeremiah 5:22).
God of hope, You are the God of now, and the God of all our tomorrows. Help us to rest in You through our storms with the assurance that You set a boundary that the roaring waters cannot cross. And the winds and the waves still obey You.
