Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza” (Acts 8:26).
Heavenly Father, You are God omnipotent, You know the way [we] take (Job 23:10). We acknowledge Your sovereignty in the words of the prophet Jeremiah, O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps Jeremiah 10:23).
Lord, we do not know what's on the road ahead, but You do. Help us to be always listening for Your direction. Let it be true of us what you once told a people in need of orientation:
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).
Father, You know the assignments, the opportunities, the people, we will encounter. Help us to be alert and ready to go to the desert road, or wherever you direct. Send us, as You did Philip, to those in need of help.
Help us to gladly follow the course You set, understanding that Your directives are not detours at all, but part of Your plan. Use us to touch the lives of those who journey with us. Teach us today to see "chance encounters" through new eyes, embracing opportunities to minister love, kindness, compassion, and hope.
Help us to always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks [us] to give the reason for the hope that [we] have...with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). Prepare us to bring clarity to confusion, knowledge to uncertainty, light to darkness, good news to perplexity. Remind us of the words of our Saviour, "Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8).
