Reflecting God

Updated: Aug 14, 2022

Day 1:

We were created in God's image and reflect His beauty.

Shortly after my mother passed away, I sought a few weeks rest in the peace and solace of my home island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. One day as I was walking through "Town"(the casual name for our capital Kingstown), I spotted a family friend hurrying towards me. "My goodness!" she declared breathlessly, "for a heart-stopping moment I thought you were your mom! You are the spitting image of your mother—I can't believe how much you look like her!" We embraced, tears in both our eyes.

I'm used to people telling me how much I look like my mother, and the resemblance makes me feel extra-connected to her. Yet, what I most long to reflect are my mom's best qualities - her generosity, her courage and determination, her unshakeable faith.

I long even more to reflect the qualities of my Father in Heaven. It is amazing to know that He placed His own stamp of beauty and approval on us. That we bear His resemblance and that we are created to be extra-connected to Him.

When I pause to affirm that God "created humans in His own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female He created them;" when I remember that "God saw all that He had made, and it was very good (Genesis 1: 27, 31), my perspective is changed. I will not be tempted to dismiss or disparage others or myself based on the world's changing standards.
